The changes add
recent evidence without discarding the observations that came before it.

Two ends of the sea-ice year

Warming and Circulation now pairs
February's relatively near-average minimum with September's third-lowest
maximum. The two figures describe different parts of the seasonal cycle, not
competing verdicts on the same measurement. The new section links NASA's
October 12 account
and NSIDC's dated analysis of the early spring retreat.

Different species, different pressures

Polar Ecosystems incorporates
the April IUCN assessments
and the October Zavodovski research.
The revision distinguishes climate-related habitat and food changes from
disease, and an adopted conservation category from a proposed reassessment.
The island's contrasting penguin trajectories show why ecosystem change cannot
be reduced to one population moving in one direction.

Measurements need more than instruments

Research and Response adds the
NSIDC case: monthly sea-ice commentary resumed after a funding-related pause,
while maps and charts had continued. Its
restart announcement
and programme-status page identify what returned and what remained suspended.
The example makes a distinction central to Krigsvold's infrastructure position:
collecting data and making it useful require different, connected work.

The permanent briefings contain the supporting sources and limits. This note
records the October 13, 2026 update; it is not a live conditions report.

Science, Policy, and Management at the University of California, Berkeley, has
been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Count of Krigsvold Fellowship.

Forest recovery after logging

Raut studies the drivers of sapling recruitment in undisturbed and selectively
logged forests in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Her fieldwork spans primary forest in
the Danum Valley Conservation Area and regenerating forest in the Ulu-Segama
Forest Reserve.

The project asks what drives differences in young-tree communities after
logging. It compares biotic factors, including adult tree species and
mycorrhizal communities, with abiotic conditions such as soil biochemistry and
light beneath the forest canopy.

Understanding how those forces interact can improve forest-restoration
strategies. It also matters for biodiversity, carbon storage, and the long-term
resilience of tropical forests under pressure.

Applications opened on March 1 for the 2026 Count of Krigsvold Fellowship,
an annual $1,000 award supporting graduate research in climate change,
environmental protection, and global conservation.

The award

The Fellowship is open to master's and doctoral students from any country. It
supports research that can improve understanding of natural systems or inform
practical responses to environmental change.

For the 2026 cycle, applicants submitted a cover letter, a one-page research
proposal, and a curriculum vitae by April 10. Funding was designated for the
following academic year.

James Howard, Count of Krigsvold, sponsors the Fellowship, and the Grand Duchy
of Westarctica administers the application and selection process. The program
turns the title's Antarctic association into direct support for environmental
scholarship.

Future application dates and requirements will be posted on the Fellowship

Community-led forest governance

Sheherazade studies decentralized forest governance in Central Sulawesi,
Indonesia. Her research focuses on Conservation Partnerships and Customary
Forest initiatives, examining how Indigenous and local communities lead the
stewardship of forests and how policy and science recognize their knowledge.

The project connects several questions that are too often treated separately:
who makes conservation decisions, what knowledge counts, and whether the people
who live with a landscape share authority over its future. That approach makes
the research relevant to biodiversity, climate resilience, governance, and
environmental justice.
