James Howard, Count of Krigsvold, and the Grand Duchy of Westarctica have established the Count of Krigsvold Fellowship, an annual $1,000 grant for graduate research in climate change and global conservation.
The Fellowship is open to master’s and doctoral students worldwide. It is designed to help emerging researchers investigate environmental problems whose consequences cross national boundaries, from ecosystem conservation and climate resilience to the governance of threatened landscapes.
From title to practical support
Howard sponsors the Fellowship as a direct expression of the purpose behind the Count of Krigsvold: using a symbolic Antarctic title to support serious work. Westarctica administers the application and selection process through its conservation program.
The inaugural application cycle closed on March 1, 2025. Sheherazade, a doctoral researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, was subsequently selected as the first Count of Krigsvold Fellow.
