Annual Record

Last reviewed September 2, 2026

The annual record makes a small institution legible. It reports what Krigsvold funded and published, where the work fell short, and what comes next.

2026 to date

Measure Record
Graduate research awards 1 award of $1,000
Fellow Ria Raut
Research focus Tropical forest recovery after selective logging in Sabah, Borneo
Public briefings Five Antarctic subject briefings reviewed and reorganized
Formal positions 1: Antarctic Observation Is Global Public Infrastructure
Institutional work Public status statement, sourcing standard, and corrections policy established

The 2026 Fellowship application cycle opened in March. Ria Raut was announced as the recipient in May. This site was subsequently rebuilt around a clearer distinction between the symbolic title and the practical work conducted under it.

2025

Measure Record
Graduate research awards 1 award of $1,000
Fellow Sheherazade
Research focus Community-led forest governance and biocultural stewardship in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia
Program milestone Count of Krigsvold Fellowship established with Westarctica

The inaugural Fellowship made the office’s research support concrete. It also demonstrated that the program’s remit is global climate and conservation research, not Antarctic science alone.

Cumulative record

Since 2025, the Fellowship has supported two graduate researchers with $2,000 in awards. Award terms and future application dates are maintained by Westarctica’s official Fellowship page.

Priorities for the next cycle

  • publish each Fellow’s year-end research update when available;
  • add issue dates and primary sources to all public briefings;
  • keep application dates and award information synchronized with Westarctica;
  • expand the record beyond announcements to outcomes.
